Language Access in Health Care Symposium
REACH NOLA, in partnership with the Louisiana Language Access Coalition, Tulane University School of Medicine Office of Community Affairs and Health Policy, LSUHSC School of Public Health and sponsoring organizations, will hold a day-long symposium bringing together Louisiana and the national dialogue on language access in health care on May 18th, 2011 in New Orleans. This event is free and open to the public.

REACH NOLA was contracted by BP in partnership with MQVN CDC to train over 15 Vietnamese individuals who had been effected by the oil disaster as interpreters free of cost with the goal that they would then be hired by BP as interpreters to assist in community service response.

REACH NOLA worked in partnership with the Language Access Coalition, Tulane School of Medicine's Office of Community Affairs and Health Policy and LSU Health Sciences Center in the School of Public Health to host the following presentations:
"Effective Communication in Health Care for Individuals Who Are Limited English Proficient & Individuals Who Are Dear or Hard of Hearing" by Office for Civil Rights, DHHS.
"Communicating Effectively with Medical Interpreters & Limited English Proficient Patients" by Katrina Badger, REACH NOLA & Louisiana Language Access Coalition.
Over 130 advocates, service providers, administrators, policy makers and community members from New Orleans attended this event. We had native English-speakers, Spanish-speakers, Portuguese-speakers, and Vietnamese-speakers. Simultaneous interpretation was provided for all languages, and in sign language.
