Health and Resilience Project
The REACH NOLA Health and Resilience Project was an innovative, sustainable effort to bring together grassroots community members, non-profits, service providers, faith-based organizations, the academic community, and funders to address the New Orleans mental health crisis since the Katrina disaster. The project resulted in the development of two community-based Health and Resilience Centers at St. Anna's Episcopal Church and Tulane Community Health Center at Covenant House. These centers and supporting partners developed and now provide culturally-appropriate and evidence-based services for stress, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The Health and Resilience Centers are now able to offer screenings, referral for services, stress management support, and access to clinical and resilience services for community members who otherwise would not access needed services.
Through the Health and Resilience Project, REACH NOLA has also worked with the People's Institute for Survival And Beyond (PISAB) and other partners to host two community Undoing Racism trainings at the Sojourner Truth Community Center and at St. Anna Episcopal Church. These trainings were followed by several discussion sessions that enabled us to explore with our board, staff, and partners how addressing institutionalized racism may help us to be more effective in our work to address health equity, community health, and access to quality health care.
